Chapter 1- Arjun vishaad yog

My goal for this year as far as reading is considered is to read the Bhagwad Geeta. I was inspired to read Bhagvad geeta as I was reading Shri Sai Satcharita. It’s believed that Bhagvad geeta can provides you answers to all the mystical and practical questions of life. As the name suggests it’s the song of God OR song from God.

Not sure what all I will explore and learn from this book or let me put it in a right way, not sure how mature is my mind to understand and absorb all that this book has to offer. However, I decided to pen my very basic thoughts and understandings as I read through the chapters of this book.

Bhagvad geeta has total 18 chapters and I just finished yesterday chapter 1 and its called Arjun Vishaad. The word vishaad means sorrow, sadness or here in this context I feel it’s the sadness arising from dilemma in Arjun’s mind hence Arjun’s vishaad yoga. The whole chapter is about Sanjay giving live commentary to King Dhritrashtra about battle yet to begin in Kurukshetra. This chapter is more about setting the stage for the actual bhagvad geeta learning as Arjun is sad and contemplating on his actions of entering in to war with his own relatives and friends. My interpretations are very raw as by no means I am a scholar but I just wanted to jot whatever I learnt from these chapters and my understanding and thoughts as a laymen that can help  people like me and even some young children. So here goes the learnings :

Chapter 1- Arjun vishaad yog

Hrishikesh- another name of Shri krishna, which means lord of mind and senses

Kapi Dhwaj – Another name of Arjun that means Monkey Bannered as Arjun’s chariot had flag bearing insignia of Lord Hanuman.

Paanchajanya- conch of Shri krishna

Anantavijay- conch of Yudhishthir,

DevaDutta – conch of Arjuna

Paundra – conch of Bheem

Sughosh – conch of Nakul

Manipushpak -conch of Sahadev

Gandeev- Arjun’s bow

My take away from chapter 1 came from story behind the shlok 20

The story teaches you to be humble and never boast / ego centric and revolves around Arjun and hanuman. Arjun in this shlok is addressed by another name, “Kapi Dhwaj,” which means “Monkey Bannered.” This name is due to the presence of the mighty Monkey God “Hanuman” on Arjun’s chariot. The story behind is that, once Arjun became very boastful of his archery skills . He said to Lord Krishna, “I do not understand why during Lord Rama’s time, the monkeys worked so hard to make a bridge from India to Lanka with heavy stones? If I was there, I would have made a bridge of arrows.” The Omniscient Lord asked him, “Alright, go ahead show me your bridge.”

Very skillfully Arjun showered thousands of arrows and made a huge bridge. Now, it was time to test it. Shree Krishna called upon great Hanuman for the job. As soon as Hanuman started walking on the bridge, it started crumbling under his feet. Arjun realized his folly; his bridge of arrows could not have upheld the weight of Lord Rama’s huge army. He asked for their forgiveness. Subsequently, Hanuman gave Arjun lessons on being humble and polite (not boastful). He also granted Arjun a boon that, during the great war, he would seat himself on Arjun’s chariot. Therefore, Arjun’s chariot flag carried the insignia of the great Hanuman.

Develop an attitude for Gratitude -LIFESTYLE tip

An Attitude for Gratitude

What better day to talk about #Gratitude than your BIRTHDAY !! Yes I celebrated my birthday recently  and as I sat down to pen my thoughts on journey so far, I realized  I am truly grateful to be blessed with this beautiful journey called “LIFE” and have realized that the new version of you (Released after you turn 40) is much- much better version of you. The bug fixes done on the  newer versions based on the previous versions glitch experience  brings out the best of you. Well I mean that the lessons you learn and how it improves you as a person is all based off your past experiences. You realize that with each passing year – you evolve as A more mature YOU, a more humble YOU, a more carefree YOU . Basically with every release You are a finer version of you. Think about it in a way that your every birthday is God’s way of releasing the newer version of you . It all depends on whether you want to install those new updates within you or not.

All those people with whom you have crossed path in the life so far , you stop categorizing them as good or bad, you realize all of them were there to provide the experiences so as you can grow and become a BETTER YOU. These experiences have made you the butterfly you are now coming out of your own cocoon.

So embrace each and every experience in your life, each and every person that you cross your path with in this life –  they are there as HIS (God’s) plan to help you grow , to turn you in to a beautiful butterfly.

Over this journey I have realized the importance of #Gratitude and how insufficiently we tap this concept which can actually bring tremendous positivity too. Appreciate people, places, experiences … specially people… let them know what you appreciate in them, remember we all are here in this world for a limited time so don’t wait until the time of the obituary(no this is not at all pessimistic view 🙂 ) to tell them what you loved and admired about them.

Get in to habit of appreciating , Leverage this attitude in your professional and personal life. Start appreciating generously and  I don’t mean false appreciation or being pretentious, When you speak from your heart it does touch other person so yes when you find something appreciative don’t hold back on conveying it. This includes people, places, experiences any and everything that you encounter.

If you consciously start putting it in to action, Before you know you will realize you are building a happier and more efficient team not to mention a team that is motivated. If you have such a team then do you think you even have to worry about the result??

You will be wondering how you can bring it in to action, there are many ways – most important in to make a conscious effort every single day and how about starting a tradition in home and work,

Have a gratitude jar at home where all the family members can put a note on what they feel thankful for and what a beautiful way to start the new year by reading them all with your loved ones. Similarly have it as a practice at work with your team on a regular cadence to share your appreciation/gratitude.

Open your heart and you will find abundance of love and positivity flowing your way… did I mention LAW OF NATURE !!!! What goes around comes around 🙂

Let’s keep embracing what life gives us with our chins up and smile on our lips and Gratitude in our heart. Let’s make it a habit and you will realize the ripple effect of having an attitude of Gratitude.

Janmashtami: The birth of Lord Krishna

Janmashtami : A festival celebrated in most parts of India to mark the birth of Lord Shree Krishna who is considered to be the  eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Janam/Janm जन्म meaning Birth, Ashtami-अष्टमी  meaning Eighth day (of Bhadrapad), On this day Lord Krishna was born to Vasudeva and Devaki, who were kept captive in a prison cell by Kans (Sanskrit:कंस- The ruler of Vrishni kingdom) in the city of Mathura. Krishna was born in the midnight and vasudev had to securely take Krishna away to his forster parents (baba Nand and Maa Yashoda). Its believed that Krishna was escaped miraculously as all the guards fell asleep at the time of his birth. The chains that Vasudev and Devaki were tied to were broken and the barred doors gently opened hence Krishna was safely escaped and grew up Gokul. Later on Krishna imparted knowledge of Bhagvad Gita to Arjun during the battle between Kaurav and Pandav as mentioned in the epic Mahabharat.

I might describe about Bhagvadgita someother time, but coming back to Janmashtami, I had read a beautiful interpretation of Janmashtami which I am sharing here . Analogy of this festival is that as soon as Krishna (The chetna – चेतना or awareness) takes birth in our mind , all the darkness अंधकार -negativity fades away just like when Krishna was born the whole prison was lit . All the chains जंजीर – Ego (I , me, myself) are broken away, and all the doors of prison-काल कोठरी  -thoughts or opinions that we are confined in- of caste, religion, relation etc) are opened up.

The idea or essence of the festival lies in self awakening so as you can get away from all the negativitiess and understand the true essence of blessing the LIFE is.

Mathura ka peda,Gokul ka haar,
Vrindavan ki khushboo,Brij ki ras-fuhaar,
Meera sa deewanapan aur radha sa pyaar,
Mubarak ho aap sabko ye janmastami ka tyohaar.

Mandla (Mandala/Mandal)

Watermark-Painting1Mandal word comes from the Sanskrit word “मंडल” the literal meaning of which is circle. The word circle also means completeness or wholeness. Its a spiritual and religious symbol in many Vedic based religions representing universe. Usually its a complex abstract design that is in circular form with one identifiable center point from which emanates patterned symbols and shapes.

A Mandal is considered to have healing properties too, for many just looking at the circular pattern brings calm and contentment, hence its used as focal point for meditation or introspection. It also depicts essence of life , our relation to the infinity and single unit of unity within us which is our “mind”. It also represents material world which includes our circle of family, friends ,society and the non-material world our solar system and its components , the planets and the sun. Its believed to be a stress buster too, try it out sometime when you are tired or stressed just simply start drawing the concentration and trying to find patterns that assimilate well to create the mandal will channelize your energy and bring your focus to the constructive thoughts and soon you will realize the feeling of calmness within you.

In many parts of India, mandal have become base for creating Rangoli’s(designs done on the floor with colored sand) .

It hurts…..

IMG_2429Yes, I am a happy go lucky person. Yes, everything is going well in my life. Yes, I feel blessed with what I have in my life. Yes, you read it right ..yet few things hurt me.

I have felt hurt in the past few weeks with what is happening around me and this time I am not going to sit, watch, hear and sulk or just make it a casual discussion over the dinner table.I am going to voice my thoughts. I know my opinion or thoughts may not make a huge difference or may not be trending or may not get hits or likes (that is not the intention either) in the electronic world because I am not a celebrity and because I am not creating controversies, but I know the pain and agony that a common citizen like me can relate to ..I know the strength of common people and I believe in it and I know together we can make the difference. I know if you and me the common people, the majority (irrespective of the color of our skin) who share the same feelings and thoughts and don’t mind sharing them on our wall, together we can create a stir,  so here it is TO THE POWER OF A COMMON CITIZEN….

  1. It hurts…when the countries I love the most are going through tragic times.Yes , you can love two countries with equal passion and patriotism at the same time.
  2. It hurts…when a 6 year old who like any other kid goes to school on a regular school day and gets shot and the parents loose him forever.
  3. It hurts…when you come to know that the 6 year old was shot by a teenager. What kind of society we are giving to the next generation that they are so vulnerable to their surrounding.
  4. It hurts… to realize that somewhere we are doing something wrong , why our kids are not strong enough mentally, they can get bullied over the brands of shoes or clothes they are wearing.
  5. It hurts…when the soldiers of the country are dedicating and sacrificing their lives and the citizens of the country ,sit in a cozy room and argue about proof of their work.
  6. It hurts… when a soldier has to justify his/her job as not any other regular job, when celebrities or business keep their own personal interest above the interest of nation.
  7. It hurts…. when a country which is based on thousands of year old civilization is just projected by media as a country of snake charmers, potholes and slums.
  8. It hurts.…when a country is misinterpreted as a land of divorces, drinks  and drugs by the wrong projection of media.
  9. It hurts….. when so called intellectual people and countries try to over power others by belittling others.
  10. It hurts…. when people don’t value the life they are blessed with and the freedom that a country provides them.
  11. It hurts…when we just depend on others to bring the change in the country, society or government.

Let’s give a clean and healthy environment for the generations to come , a legacy that they can be proud of. Let’s be the change we want to see in the world. Let’s not watch the reactions happen let’s be the catalyst.

Let’s have no more HURTS !!!!

GOND Painting : (Ancient Tribal Art of India)

Gond is the second largest tribal group in India located mostly in the central part of India.Gonds are considered to be of Dravidian origin.

Gond_PaintingThe Gond Paintings are traditional art form of Gond Community mostly done on the walls and floors of the homes of the people. The major belief in doing so is that the Gonds believe that looking at beautiful stuff brings good luck and also wards off evil. The Gonds are very close to nature hence nature plays an important role in their paintings. Most of their paintings depict flora and fauna of local areas and Gods and Goddess. The colors used in Gond Paintings are Natural colores or dyes mostly made of colored soil, leaves, flowers etc. The speciality of Gond Paintings is the bright colors used , simple designs, double borders and if you look carefully  the paintings are just made of lines, dashes and dots. Its the Gond Tribe that is depicted in the The Jungle Book By Rudyard Kipling.

Although this art form is getting extinct but the government, various NGO’s and artist groups are trying hard to revive this artform. My little dedication to this beautiful art form is through this handmade GOND PAINTING.

Do try out this fascinating art form and introduce the younger generations with the rich art forms of the world.

Happy Painting !!!

Krishna’s Teaching : “I did for you”

KrishnaSketch-ThoughtsJanmashtami is celebrated all over the world as the birth day of lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is known around the world as the preacher/messenger of love.
He has also given the idea about the way to lead the life which is documented as preaching to Arjun in the “Bhagvad Geeta”. There have been lots of incidences penned as small stories of Krishna to teach the common man about basics of life. One  such story is :
Once Krishna and Arjuna were walking towards a village. Arjuna was pestering Krishna, asking him why Karna should be considered an unparalleled Donor & not him ?
Krishna, turned two mountains into gold. Then said,  “Arjun, distribute these two gold mountains among villagers, but you must donate every bit of it “. Arjun went into the village, and proclaimed he was going to donate gold to every villager, and asked them to gather near the mountain. The villagers sang his praises and Arjun walked towards the mountains with a huffed up chest. For two days and two nights Arjun shoveled gold from the mountain and donated to each and every villager. The mountains did not diminish in the slightest. Most villagers came back and stood in queue within minutes. Now Arjun was exhausted, but not ready to let go of his  Ego, told Krishna he couldn’t go on any longer without rest.
Then Krishna called Karna and told him to donate every bit of the two gold mountains.
Karna called the  villagers,  and said “These two Gold mountains are yours. ” and walked away.Arjun sat dumbfounded. Why hadn’t this thought occurred to him?
Krishna smiled mischievously and told him “Arjun, subconsciously, you were attracted to the gold, you regretfully gave it away to each villager, giving them what you thought was a generous amount. Thus the size of your donation to each villager depended only on your imagination. You expected in your subconscious for people to praise you for your donation. Karna holds no such reservations. Look at him walking away after giving away a fortune, he doesn’t expect people to sing his praises, he doesn’t even care if people talk good or bad about him behind his back. That is the sign of a man already on the path of enlightenment”.
Giving with an Expectation of a Return in the form of a Compliment,Thanks or similar deed is not a Gift, then it becomes a Trade.
We all pretend to be “Karna” in our life but majority of us act as “Arjun “. We share, we do little good things for others but the continuity of that relation depends on the trade meaning the thought always comes up “I did so and so thing for him/her and s/he didn’t reciprocate the same when my time came” or “I did such and such thing for him/her and s/he did not even acknowledge it”, some people can go up to the extent of making other realize “I did it for you”. We forget that we don’t have to maintain the balance sheet of our karma as a trader , what we do or don’t do is between us and that supreme power . We might be just the chosen one by him to reach to desired person. The day we will learn this lesson we all will come to peace with our soul. “Give without  expecting anything in Return.”
There is a beautiful little teaching in the of form a story related to this
One day Rukamini (lord Krishna’s wife) asked him ” please tell me the true meaning of love and Friendship”
Krishna replied mischievously ” Where is love or friendship when it’s done with mean intentions” the idea behind this is that any friendship or relation that is based on the simple aspect of trade (mean) as to what I will get out of it is never a true relationship or friendship.
So the idea of “I did it for you ” itself means you are trading your deeds and it can become the cause of your own unhappiness or sorrow. Let’s do good and then forget ..
Jai shree Krishna

Floral Tiara’s

Spa_party6Floral Tiara’s are a new trend this season and loved by the girls of all age group. Like all the other girls my LO was also fascinated by this beautiful accessory and wanted it for her birthday. I decided to make a craft activity with her and the joy of having one custom built with the colors she likes and satisfaction of “made by me” was good enough for her to cherish this tiara. Try making this craft with your girls this summer, or have a Girls night out with your friends and have this as a party activity, I am sure each one will enjoy as not only its a beautiful accessory but also a great prop for the photo shoots. You can use flowers of different colors or even different sizes. These are perfect return gifts too for birthdays or for any bridal shower give aways or even the religious functions(Like kanya pooja in Navratri) . Use them for the preggy mom’s photo shoot. I am sure it will brighten that smile even more 🙂

Wreath : Perfect for summer ,Easter and Holi

BaloonWreathWreath making is another interest of mine. Those welcoming wreath hanging on the door not only look beautiful but also display the taste and mood of the home owner.

This wreath made with balloons is perfect for summer , hang it from Holi time ,it goes well with Easter theme too and then keep it till whole summer, the fun colours add the zing and the balloons makes this wreath quiet whimsical too. I love this one because you can use it as backdrop decor on your kids birthday , just customize it by adding the number of age of your kid on his/her birthday in the middle and there you go 🙂
